Algerian pop culture

The berber population in Algeria is a minority, but retains more of the indigenous culture and identity. They are located, mostly, in the south of Alegeria. They still keep their own dialect, that is what helps them to mantein their common identity, but among the years they have been mixing it with arabic.

With the arabic culture, also came the Muslim as a main religion. The most of the people in Algeria follow the Sunni Muslim, one of the major branches of Islam. If well Algeria for it´s large territory have a lot of variety in their beliefs, this one is in the top.

For Algerians football is a pasion, and ES Sétif  is the biggest club in the country based in Setif. They have won eight times the  Algerian professional ligue and have become the most valued team for them.

Masculinity and individualism (Col vs Alg)

Base on the previous insights, we can compare six diferents dimensions between Algeria and colombia. But above all there are two dimensions that stand out: the masculinity by it´s similarity and the individualism by it´s big gap.

Masculinity is the most similar dimension between this countries. Base on hostfede insights: «this dimension indicates that the society will be driven by competition, achievement and success, with success being defined by the winner/best in field – a value system that starts in school and continues throughout organisational life.»

In the other hand, the individualism in Colombia is too low next to alrgeria.  this can be define as: «the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members.» (hostfede insights). In short, Colombia has a collective culture, where everyones belongs to groups, and Algeria is more individual, where they just concerns about their direct family.

In conclusion, the masculinity is almost the same but the individualism is too diferent.

Algerian in Barranquilla?

Multi-active people are talkative, impulsive types who attach great importance to feelings, relationships and people-orientation. They like to do many things at the same time and are tend to feel confined by agendas.

And recognizing Algeria and Colombia (Brranquilla) as multi-actives cultures. We can conclude that a Algerian in Barranquilla will feel at home with the people behave. This cultures are completely compatible since are in the same clasification based on the Lewis model.

Definitely, is not the same but there are a lot of similarities in terms of behavior that can make the teambuilding days easier.

Is shocking how people who live that far, in two diferent continents, and that aparently hve nothing in commun can actually be so similar in terms of culture behavior.

To sum up, this countries in terms of culture behavior are compatible, and can udertand each other easily.

My single story

Algeria is a unknown country for me, I am not really aware of their culture. But for it´s surroundings i picture this country underdeveloped, with a lot of poverty. As you can see in the image, i think that is a muslim country where girls are in charge of taking care od children, and the boys are not present, and usually working. I base all my stereotypes in the single story i have been told about Africa.

I invite you to keep track of my blog, for start discovering together the truth about Algerian´s culture and interesting facts about this country. Let´s broke the stereotypes and get to know more about a wonderful country.

Gender stereotypes (ALG vs COL)

Understanding gender stereotype as a social standar of what is right to do or not to do based on the sex of someone, it depends directly in the culture context. In this two exact contexts can be seen how this depends also with the religious believes, in this case Catholicism and Islamism.

The islam is practiced by the 97% of Algerians, and it governs their personal, political, economic and legal lives. And also defines the gender roles in the society, mostly. In this ideology women should accomodate their bahavior in order to accepted. The feminity and masculinity are concepts that are also highly reflected in the “male dominance and female subordination”

In the other hand, Colombia is influenced by catholicism, and also have influence in the education, social welfare and organization. But it does not interfers ,mostly, with the role that they perform in the society. Otherwise, in the recent years women have entered on a massive scale in the formal labor markets. But still facing worst working conditions than men.

Reminding that this is just based on stereotypes, in both of the cases above is shown a sexual divission where males are favored. Eventhough in Colombia this is seem as an inequiality and is already on a change, meanwhile in Algeria is just a term of belief, that is accepted.

Dining and eating etiquette (ALG vs COL)

Such a common thing as dining is a worldwide practice, that even when the final purpose is the same, is actually acomplished in many ways relying on the culture. Below are going to be compared the diferences and similarities, in case that there are, between the dining etiquete of Algeria and Colombia.

Algerians usually eat with their hands (right hand) except for couscous that is eaten with tablespoon and stew that is eaten with fork. For sure you will be prompted to take more so make sure that you leave a bit of food on your dish when you are done. The most common manner to eat is on the floor on a mat or in a low table so be aware if is necessary to remove your shoes when you arrive.

In the other hand, Colombians always wait for the host to be seated and the dinner will start when he say “buen provecho”. Almost all of the food is eaten with utensils. Also make sure that hans are always visible and do not rest elbows on the table. Finally, is polite to try everything and leave a small amount of food on the plate when you finish.

In conclusion, the principal similarity is that in both cultures is well seen to leave food on the plate when the act is finish. And the biggest differences are that while Algerians eat with the hands, Colombians eat with utensils. And that while Algerians eat usually on the floor, Colombians always eat on a table. No matter the culture you are, always remember that the key to be be respectful, is following others.

Algerian stereotypes

As the largest country on Africa, Algeria is a popular country surrounded by a lot of stereotypes, that are highly marked by their war history.

The most populars stereotypes are:

– Everyone is black

– Poor country

– Mean people

Despite all this comments, some of them are close to the reality, but most of them are way far from it.

In fact, Algeria is the 33rd most populous country in the world, becoming one of the countries with most divirsication in Africa, and also one with most of caucasian population on africa.

Also, is a country with a lot of resources in terms of petroleum and natural gas, what results in the 3rd most important economy in the Middle East, being a rich country. But actually, is a country with significant social inequalities that results on a poor population.

Finally, Algerians are often categorize as mean people. But being aware of the history that precedes them, is understandable their attitude. Principally of the need of a visa for going there.

In conclussion, Algerian is a really big country and because of it is followed by a lot of prejudices that sometimes can be true but in other cases are not. This is actually a common behaviar on countries of this size, where the variety is really large.
